Encouragement / Hugs

NaPoWriMo22 Day 13 – Two poems today. The first is a good enough fit for today’s napowrimo.net prompt, to write a poem that rejoices in good things ahead or at least admits the possibility they might be coming your way (it wishes for good things ahead for others). I wrote it in response to murisopsis’s prompt #12, to write a Waltmarie poem. I think the second poem pairs nicely with it. Also, I’m linking to a poem I love, “Sometimes” by Sheenah Pugh, that touches on the theme.

(read between the long lines for a
special message for encouragers)

If you are in need of encouragement,
I hope
that when others point out
the good
parts and the potential in what
you do,
it doesn’t end there but like a snatch of song
comes back
humming and gives another boost
to you.

I hug my pillows. I do.
The large yellow one
and the bird-wearing-
glasses one too.

Find it strange? I don’t.
A hug is a hug. It feels
good (snug). You may
call it silly. I won’t.

I read that hugging a stuffed animal or something similar provides some of the same therapeutic benefits as hugging a person. In addition to my two pillows, I have a stuffed penguin I bought at a thrift shop for a few dollars. Roly-Poly is round in all the right places and is a perfect delight to squeeze. I even toss him in the air for a penguin loop-de-doo. Still a child at heart and happy to be that way! (Though I don’t think having a stuffed animal as an adult is childish at all.) Peace to your !

  1. Aww, I really like your poems! And stuffed animals. :) As a kid I had hundreds of them, but I still have a dozen or so. :)

Thank you for the kind words! I hope you have many happy hugs with your stuffed animals. 😊

  2. murisopsis says:

I love your Waltmarie! Excellent message and it is so naturally occurring… <3

    1. serendippitysays says:

It took a good bit of word wrangling to make it work, but the final version left me humming!

  3. writingwhatnots says:

Love your Encouragement Walt-Marie – the song that comes back as a hum is a lovely way of expressing it. Thank you for sharing the Sheenah Pugh poem too. Also enjoyed the hugs.🤗

    1. serendippitysays says:

Yay! Thank you for letting me know. Sending a virtual hug your way!
