Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, about 14 miles from where I live, is notable as the cloudiest city in the United States (cloudy 77% of the year) and the sixth-cloudiest city in North and Central America. This is ideal for a friend of mine, who feels more energetic when the sky is overcast, but for those of us who thrive on sunshine, living with western PA gray is a test of endurance and faith.

Western PA Gray
No wandering lonely as a cloud here.
Here clouds congregate, mass, throng,
crowd into every inch of sky.
No fluffy white cotton balls either—
here they’re icebergs blotting out the sun,
layer upon layer of iron and steel and lead
collapsing the horizon.
You can suffocate under the weight
of western PA gray.
